When we think of ‘seasoned salt’, images of a white powder with chemicals and flavor enhancers dance through our heads. So, it is with Pure pleasure that we tried a salt that is the flower of the sea, blended with all natural flavors that enhance fish and shellfish.

The first ingredient is the pure white thin salt crystal that is scooped from the surface of the salt pan called Flor de Sal. Next, lemon zest is added for sparkle, Jamaican pepper for Zing, and rosemary for flavor.

The fragrance is spicy and enticing. The look is beige grains flecked with orange and black. Although this can be used as a rub, this is not a salt to be simmered or added during the cooking process, but a salt to sprinkle over a freshly prepared fish or shellfish dish.

Flor de Sal is a mild, almost sweet salt, and the famous Portuguese chef, Vitor Sobral, balanced its subtle flavor with just the right amount of natural seasonings. This ‘finishing salt’ makes fish tacos taste richer, and is a welcome addition to the butter that lobster and clams are dipped into! Shake a little on salmon just off the grill and sprinkle this over your next fish and chips. Our team liked it on the scrumptious sardines from Portugal that we reviewed in the fish section as well as on delicate trout with melted raw butter.
