Belmandil Coda 1 Flor de Sal
If you love salads and vegetable dishes, this is a ‘seasoned’ salt to use that is fragrant, fresh and unusual. Created by Vitor Sobral, a famous Portuguese chef, this mixture can be used either as a rub on vegetables before grilling, or as a finishing touch after preparation of any dish that is completely or predominantly vegetable.
The salt is the famous Flor de Sal from Portugal: the cream of the sea, pure white flakes scooped from the surface of the clean waters of Portugal. Vanilla, orange zest and black pepper are the additions. The fragrance is warmly sweet and the look is slightly moist beige grains with black flecks.
Flor de Sal is a mild salt with an almost sweet finish, so the addition of vanilla is a perfect and aromatic marriage. The orange is the bittersweet high note with just the right amount of pepper for interest and flair. What a lovely way to finish buttered vegetables, or grilled vegetables tossed with olive oil or sprinkle this over a salad after it has been tossed: the salt is mild and the blend highlights the subtle flavors of fresh or cooked vegetables.
In a lovely 3.5-ounce jar, this can be tucked into your spice cabinet or drawer, or even put on the table: just a few pinches in your fingers and all things vegetable are enhanced. We haven’t tried it, but our team imagines that this would be a great finishing salt for asparagus soup, spinach dip, and even pestos. Not meant to be cooked with, but for enhancement of an already prepared dish, this could be just the salt that you are looking for to spark your salads, soups, or even Bloody Mary’s!
