Spicy Ginger Pear Mustard
A Perfect Pear

For those who are looking for subtle mustard, you now have found it. The list of ingredients will give you assurance as to why I say this: Organic pear puree, Coleman’s mustard, Ginger Puree, Distilled Vinegar, Turmeric, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Natural Pear Flavor.

The first ingredient, organic pear puree, contributes highly to its softer, subtler flavor and makes it less mustard forward. Along with the ginger puree, you are talking about flavored mustard, with the emphasis on flavor, rather than mustard. Not hot with ginger, but balanced with pear, this mustard complements more subtle cheeses and delicate meats, contributing a unique flavor.

The label says spicy, but it’s a complexity, not a heat. The fragrance is light and I get the smallest hint of lemon along with a sweetness from the pear. I know it sounds strange, but its almost like smelling lemonade from a distance. The texture is like a fairly smooth puree, and the consistency, while clinging to a spoon, is not thick enough to stand a spoon in. All in all, a lighter mustard in every way, those looking for a mustard to complement rather than make a bold statement, will be very pleased and intrigued.

The standard mustard yellow, it looks like it will have a kick, but the elegant label with a graceful branch heavy with pears, tells you that there is more subtlety involved. A glass jar with a gold lid, this gentle, unique mustard is a satisfying 11-ounces.

The owner has a recipe where she mixes this mustard with breadcrumbs and Parmesan and crusts a rack of lamb with it. She also says that it’s great on soft pretzels. Cooked, spread or dipped, this mustard is an enhancer of lighter foods and will please those who want a whisper, rather than a shout.
