Minorcan Cran-Datil Jam Minorcan Datil
When I look at this jam’s color, I keep thinking of the ruby red of Dorothy’s slippers. The color is rich and glowing like that, and the flavor will transport you beyond Oz to new cranberry and datil pepper realms. This is nothing like any cranberry-anything that I have ever smelled or tasted. Fresh cranberries, sugar, datil peppers and fruit pectin. That’s all.
Not too sweet, not sour, not bitter or metallic tasting, and with just the right amount of kick from the datil peppers, this is a one of a kind, refreshing take on what can be done with cranberries!
When tasted alone you are aware of cranberry pulp and skins, and looking through the jam you can see them, along with little bits of datil pepper. It is a perfect blend so there is not too much of one or the other. It is this ideal combination that lends a distinct flavor to both the cranberry and the datil that they would not get in any other way. You’ve got to taste it to see what I mean.
We tasted the jam on coconut bread and also crackers with cream cheese. The first thing you notice is that the datil heat becomes diminished. Not that it is too strong to begin with, but for those of even the faintest of heart, you can thoroughly enjoy this unusual cranberry-datil flavor on or with something, without the need to reach for liquid or a fire extinguisher.
The owner/creator says that she uses it year round on turkey sandwiches or as a condiment for turkey or ham. Her recipe for putting this in a puff pastry with brie cheese sounds divine, but I used the easy route and had it with cream cheese and crackers and loved it!
In a hexagonal, 9-ounce glass jar with a gold lid, this is a gourmet gift that will pleasantly surprise anyone who thinks they know cranberries. With a charming sketch on the label of the old St. Augustine lighthouse and a Caribbean inspired house of the nation’s oldest city, you know that you are experiencing something unique: the rare datil pepper is only grown in the St. Augustine, Florida area. This jam is a perfect combination of flavors. I have always liked cranberries, but I love this Cran-Datil Jam!
